For all those (non-existent) spare moments I have ...
there's this, which I believe I first read about on Brontë Blog a couple of months ago and which just arrived on my doorstep yesterday as part of an Amazon order I had placed a while back. The book was formerly published as Adèle, and I have no idea if it's any good -- but given that its subtitle is Jane Eyre's Hidden Story, I don't much care.
As my friends and former grad student pals know, I'm fascinated by alternative narratives suggested by the main thread of a tale, narratives that exist either literally or metaphorically like a palimpsest beneath the surface of the primary narrative but that are "lost" narratives, haunting the main tale.
That concept is one that I explored in relation to the 1940s American woman's film in my Ph.D. dissertation, and I suppose it's always informing my research choices now, albeit in slightly different fashion.
And as everyone knows who was reading my blog this past summer, I also have an obsession of sorts with all things Jane Eyre-related.
So I'm putting this book on the table next to my comfy chair in the living room and vowing to give myself the treat of a good read in the not-too-distant future. A well-earned break sometime soon will keep me from becoming too savage about my work load -- I hope.

Hi, For some reason I cannot email you the regular way. I am reading Suite Francaise - the greatest book I have read in a long long time. Thanks!
