No-tech day
Sigh.
AT&T has been out and declares that there is, indeed, a fault on the line, and the problem is at their end. That's good news. It's on them, not us.
The bad news is that it'll take a few more days for them to do the repair. Naturally.
I'm taking suggestions of carriers to switch to. All ideas welcome. I've had it.
(I'm posting this from my office but I don't plan on being here again until Friday, so my internet access will be sparse in the next few days.)

Comcast. Or your local cable carrier. We've had them for two years and three months, and it has never ONCE gone out. And fast? LIGHTNING fast. Even my FIL, who has DSL at his house, was astonished at the speed. It's faster than the network here on campus. It's pricier, but we also got rid of our land line when we converted, so we actually are saving money. :-)
And you know how I feel about AT&T. ;-(

Yeah, Comcast gets good feedback in general. More expensive, but as you say, I can then get rid of the land line altogether since I only use my cell phone ANYWAY.
We don't have a cable hook-up in place (we have satellite TV), so I think we're going to have to pay the $99 home-visit installation fee. And it will be SO worth it to get rid of AT&T.
I'm going to make an appointment for the very SECOND I return from Alaska.
